Residential

The code around water exists for a reason.

Bonding, GFCI protection and disconnect placement around pools and spas are the rules with the least room for interpretation in the entire residential code.

Hot Tub, Pool & Outdoor Wiring — an example of this kind of work
Overview

Hot Tub, Pool & Outdoor Wiring

Water and electricity are the most heavily code-regulated combination in residential work. Spa and pool circuits require GFCI protection, a disconnect at the right distance, and an equipotential bonding grid that is not optional.

What this job typically includes

  • Dedicated GFCI-protected 240V spa circuit sized to the unit
  • Code-required disconnect at the correct distance from the water
  • Equipotential bonding grid for pools, decks, ladders and rails
  • Pool pump, heater, and salt-cell circuits
  • Landscape and low-voltage outdoor lighting with transformers
  • Weatherproof in-use covers, outdoor receptacles and permits
How it works

From your request to a finished job.

  1. 01

Tell us what is going on

Call, or spend two minutes on the quote form. We ask what the problem is, what kind of property, and where you are — enough to pass it to the right contractors and no more.

  2. 02

We pass it to local electricians

Your request goes to independent electrical contractors who work in your area and do that type of work. A panel upgrade and a PLC fault are not the same trade, so the kind of job decides who sees it.

  3. 03

    Contractors get in touch

Contractors who want the job contact you directly to talk it through and give you a price. Compare them, ask questions, and choose who you want — or nobody.

  4. 04

    You decide and hire

Your agreement for the work is with the contractor you choose, not with us. Before you agree, get the quote in writing, check their licence and insurance with your state, and ask whether a permit is needed.

Questions

Hot Tub & Pool — what people ask.

What size circuit does a hot tub need?

Most 240V spas call for a 50-amp GFCI-protected circuit, but it is dictated by the unit's data plate, not by a rule of thumb. Plug-and-play 120V models are the exception and often still want a dedicated circuit.

What is equipotential bonding and why does a pool need it?

It ties all the conductive parts around the water — rebar, ladders, rails, the pump, the deck — together so that no voltage difference can exist between two things a swimmer might touch at once. It is what prevents the shock hazard people mean when they say 'electrified pool'.

How far does the disconnect have to be from the spa?

The code sets both a minimum and a maximum — it must be within sight of the equipment and beyond a minimum distance from the water. The exact figures depend on your adopted code cycle, which is one of the reasons this is not DIY work.
