Your panel is the ceiling on everything else.

If you are being told you cannot add an EV charger, a hot tub or a heat pump, the panel is usually why. A 200-amp service removes that ceiling for a decade or more.

Electrical Panel Upgrades & Replacement — an example of this kind of work
Overview

Electrical Panel Upgrades & Replacement

Older homes were wired for a fraction of today's load. A panel upgrade replaces an undersized or obsolete service with a modern 200-amp panel so EV chargers, heat pumps, induction ranges and additions all have room to run.

What this job typically includes

  • Load calculation to size the new service correctly for your actual and planned loads
  • Utility coordination and disconnect/reconnect scheduling
  • New 200-amp (or 400-amp) panel, main breaker and grounding electrode system
  • Replacement of the meter socket and service entrance conductors where required
  • Full circuit labelling and directory
  • Permit pulled and municipal inspection scheduled
How it works

From your request to a finished job.

  1. 01

Tell us what is going on

Call, or spend two minutes on the quote form. We ask what the problem is, what kind of property, and where you are — enough to pass it to the right contractors and no more.

  2. 02

We pass it to local electricians

Your request goes to independent electrical contractors who work in your area and do that type of work. A panel upgrade and a PLC fault are not the same trade, so the kind of job decides who sees it.

  3. 03

    Contractors get in touch

Contractors who want the job contact you directly to talk it through and give you a price. Compare them, ask questions, and choose who you want — or nobody.

  4. 04

    You decide and hire

Your agreement for the work is with the contractor you choose, not with us. Before you agree, get the quote in writing, check their licence and insurance with your state, and ask whether a permit is needed.

Questions

Panel Upgrades — what people ask.

How long does a panel upgrade take?

Most residential 200-amp upgrades are a single day of work. Power is off for roughly 4 to 8 hours of that day. What can stretch it is the utility — if the meter or service drop has to change, the utility disconnect has to be scheduled and that can add days to the calendar, not to the labour.

Do I need a permit?

Yes, essentially everywhere. A service change is inspected work. Any electrician who offers to skip the permit is offering to hand you an unpermitted service that will surface during your next home sale or insurance claim.

Will my utility bill go up with a bigger panel?

No. Amperage is capacity, not consumption. A 200-amp panel does not draw more than a 100-amp panel — it just allows more to be connected without overloading.

Can I upgrade the panel and add an EV charger at the same time?

That is the most cost-effective way to do it. The trip charge, permit and labour overlap, and the load calculation only has to happen once.
